GROWING IN WISDOM TO IMPART WISDOM

The aged women likewise that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the younger women to be sober (or wise), to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Titus 2:3-5

As we looked at this helpful and instructive passage of Scripture before, we saw that the Apostle Paul instructed Titus that the older women were to be godly examples before the younger women. As these ladies walked in obedience to the guidelines laid out for us in these verses, they were to teach the younger women. What a wonderful privilege! I am so blessed to have been taught truth and seen that truth modeled by some women who have gone before me. And now it's my turn! A pastor friend was asked by his little girl one Saturday evening, "Papa, do you have to preach tomorrow?" He enthusiastically replied, "Honey, I don't HAVE to preach tomorrow; I GET to preach!" That's the way I feel. The responsibility to teach, mentor, and counsel the younger women is not some huge burden that weighs me down. Rather, it is such a joy to have a small part in seeing young women learn to lovingly and joyfully fill the beautiful role the Lord has planned for them.

The Rare Jewel of Christian contentment PDF Print E-mail

Ladies, I want to take a little detour from our study in Titus 2.  Lord willing, we’ll get back to that in a few weeks. Recently, I’ve been meditating on the need for us as Christian women to cultivate the rare and wonderful quality of contentment in our lives.  So, here goes…

My husband and I are in ministry at a small church in western Illinois, and I was privileged this morning to share with a few ladies in the church over breakfast.  We looked at I Timothy 6:6-10, Now godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.  And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.  But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.  For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

TITUS 2 Part 3

As we delve into Titus 2:1-5, I want us to first consider, how the Apostle Paul tells Titus that the older women were to instruct the younger women. He stated very clearly that they are to teach the younger women through their lives. We are all familiar with the old adage, "Your life speaks so loudly, I cannot hear your words." Well, there is more than a little truth to that statement. We are called upon to be godly examples whose faith can be followed. We are first and foremost to teach through a holy life. Verse 3 tells us that the older women are to be in "behavior as becometh holiness". This means a reverent lifestyle; one that is consecrated to God. Women who are reverent in behavior will adorn themselves modestly, speak with discretion, and conduct themselves in a manner that is above reproach.

Portrait of a Godly Woman - part 2 PDF Print E-mail

Last time we began considering what a Godly woman looks like, and we concluded that the first step in becoming a Godly woman is to have the glory of God as our highest aim. I'd like to continue by searching the Scripture to see how we as women can fulfill this glorious purpose for which we were created.  We can only bring God glory when we are living according to His Word - when we are functioning in the role He has designed for us as women.  I believe many women are floundering because they don't know what their purpose in life is, or exactly what their role should be.  All around us are women who can't find security or significance in a career, a relationship, fashion, marriage, children,  or anywhere else they look for it.  The reason for this is because security and/or significance can only be found in the Lord Jesus.  Multitudes of women, even Christian women, have been influenced by unrealistic images of womanhood as portrayed by the media.  So many have their purpose in life shaped by their desire for happiness, which they have been told repeatedly that they deserve.  But our purpose here on earth is not necessarily to be happy, but to bring glory to the One Who created us!  And of course there is only one way to know how to do that, and that is through His Word.  We are so incredibly blessed that He would give us His Word to instruct us in His ways!

Ecclesiastes 7:27-28 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account: Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

Matthew Henry comments on this verse that Solomon could scarcely find one upright man, and among a thousand wives and concubines he could not find one good woman. What a sad commentary! And yet, we find ourselves in a society very similar to the one Solomon lived in, and it is still rare to find a godly woman. Well, isn't that what Proverbs 31:10 tells us, Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
